Blue Ladies is a commentary on the fetishization of women according to race and how this exoticization of women of colour perpetuates racial bias, particularly when this objectification of women of colour is from the perspective of the male caucasion gaze and the misappropriation of culture; as with the Hula girl that was (and still is) used to market Hawaii to tourists in the 1950’s.
The women are crying tears that eventually cover their skin in blue emulating the skin tone of the Vladimir Tretchikoff painting Chinese Girl, aka the Blue/Green Lady. A popular mass produced print adorning the walls of many western homes during the 1960’s and 70’s.
